As Umi panted, hands on her knees, beside him, he allowed his focus to drift back to her. He eyed her for a moment as cars passed through the intersection and other people began to mill around them, waiting for their chance to cross as well. For an instant, he felt guilty. Dancing required endurance, which she must have in spades, so for her to be so worn out meant Kurama must have run faster than he had intended.
❧No need to apologize. The blame lies with me, after all. I hadn’t realized I was wearing you out.
And here he had been so sure that he was taking it at a reasonable pace; it was all he could do not to scowl at the pavement. When the others around them suddenly started pushing past, Kurama shook his head free of the discomposing thoughts and took her hand in his. Instead of taking off running, he simply walked with her at a quickened pace across the painted white lines, for he had no desire to push people out of the way or knock them over in a haste that wasn’t even truly his own.
Once they had reached the opposing street, his hand tightened around hers and his feet picked up to a run, but one considerably slower than the last. At a pace like this, conversation should be possible for her, right?
❧One should only claim victory after victory has been grasped. It isn’t wise, raising your hopes so high— you may still be late. To start with, could you tell me what time your class begins in the first place?
They would have to keep on this street for at least the next five blocks before turning again. Hopefully she wouldn’t run out of breath before then.
While she panted from running, she wondered why she had been so tired- her endurance must’ve not been as good as she had thought. She glanced upward at Shuichi as he spoke.
“No, don’t blame yourself,” she chuckled lightly,” I guess my endurance just wasn’t what I thought it was.”
She looked at him curiously for a moment before looking around at the crowd around them- still lightly feeling the presence of the demon. Her thoughts were interrupted as he grabbed her hand, causing her to blush slightly, and they continued at a quickened pace.
She continued to focus on her breathing, along with their contact, while running again. Her focus was broken when he’d asked about the time her class started- she inwardly scolded herself. That definitely would’ve been something to tell him in the first place!
“When you put it like that, I’m afraid you’re right.. Well, it starts at 2, and my alarm was set about 30 minutes before it started…” she frowned a little,” you said earlier it’d take about thirty minutes to get there, right? I’m afraid I’ll just be a few minutes later than what I first thought, but that’s not too bad- we’re actually getting there pretty fast!”
“Shuichi, I know it’s a little early for a thanks, but it means a lot that you’d help me like this only having just met you today.” This brought back her earlier thoughts about how much older this boy acted than his age- must be impeccable breeding, like hers.
